Holy Cross Parish, Lansing at 1611 W Oakland Ave, Lansing, MI 48915 US - Closing Activities

Closing Activities

Holy Cross Parish began serving the West side of Lansing in 1924.  In those early years, our members had to clean up the ashes and embers remaining from the crosses the KKK burned on the front lawn.  At one point, Holy Cross grew to such an amazing number that its Parish boundaries were amended to create St Gerard Parish.

Now, as a result of a decrease in the availability of both Franciscan friars and Diocesan priests, The Franciscan Province has decided to withdraw its Friars and the Diocese Of Lansing has directed Holy Cross Parish to close and merge with St Mary's Cathedral Parish.

On the weekend of June 20/21 Holy Cross Parish will celebrate its last Masses as a community.  On Saturday, June 20, Mass will be celebrated at 4:00 PM, followed by an Open House in the Parish Hall.   On Sunday, June 21 Bishop Boyea will con-celebrate with Fr Maurice Hayes, our last Pastor, and other attending Clergy the Last Mass at Holy Cross at Noon.  This Mass will conclude with a reverencing of sacred church objects, transfer of symbolic sacred items, including relics of the True Cross, St Anthony and St Vincent DePaul, to St Mary's in an automobile procession, which will be led by the Bishop and the Blessed Sacrament, to St Mary's.  At St Mary's, the Blessed Sacrament, sacred relics and other important items will be received by the Pastor and members of St Mary's as a sign that our two communities of faith have become one.  The day's activities will conclude with a reception at St Mary's.

The Catholic Community of Lansing is invited to join us for this solemn occasion.  This is a time of reflection and sadness and your prayers and support are appreciated.  But, this is also a time of hope and determination.  We pray that our mission as disciples of Jesus will continue with our ministry to Lansing's central area and the near west side.  St Francis himself was asked by God to rebuild His Church.  Today, we are all asked to do the same!

The Holy Cross Parish Office will remain open until July 15, 2009.  At that time the parish records will be moved to St. Mary Cathedral and to Diocesan Archives.  Please contact St. Mary Cathedral Parish Office at 517-484-5331 after July 15th.
